The World Health Organisation (WHO) and a range of medical authorities across the globe have highlighted disinfectants as playing a critical role in the fight against Covid-19. This is because effective disinfectant products are particularly strong in attacking enveloped viruses, compromising their outer layer and degrading its structure. Here at Antios, our antibacterial wipes contain benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) which kills these enveloped viruses.
As far as these quaternary ammonium compounds go, benzalkonium chloride is one of the most effective and long-established surface-acting agents in history. Introduced by disinfectant giant Lysol at the turn of the 20th century, the chemical was quickly adopted by cleaning product manufacturers across the world. In 2020 and in the age of Covid-19, benzalkonium chloride is a major component of effective disinfectants, bringing its virus-fighting powers to the frontline in schools, hospitals, homes and more.
Benzalkonium Chloride and Covid-19
But what makes the benzalkonium chloride in Antios wipes so powerful? The answer lies in how the chemical’s molecules have an ammonia atom at centre of two methyl stubs and two long carbon chains, with positively charged carbon chains being attracted to the negatively charged membranes that envelope bacteria and viruses – including Covid-19. This effect leads to the fatty envelope encasing the virus to be broken apart, destroying and neutralising harmful pathogens in the process.
Cleaning products containing this powerful disinfectant are among the most convenient and practical out there – including Antios wipes, which are ideal for cleaning hard-surfaced environments. When users of Antios wipes apply pressure using the wipe, the wipe physically removes germs which are then attached to the wipe. As well as removing harmful germs from such surfaces, wipes also leave a powerful layer of antiseptic on the surface, which continues to kill germs and prevent their spread.
Fighting Infection with Antios
Antios is only one organisation in an entire industry which has praised the disinfecting power of benzalkonium chloride. Science Direct has recently highlighted the value of the chemical in the disinfection of hard surfaces, which may be in the workplace, the home or in a healthcare setting:
“The quaternaries commonly are used in ordinary environmental sanitation of noncritical surfaces, such as floors, furniture, and walls. EPA-registered quaternary ammonium compounds are appropriate to use for disinfecting medical equipment that contacts intact skin (e.g. blood pressure cuffs).”
Beyond its application across a range of settings, this chemical offers itself as a strong alternative to alcoholic formulas, in many cases yielding a less irritating effect upon the skin, killing 99.9% of bacteria without causing adverse dermatological effects. The Antios formula also contains glycerine, a natural humectant that retains and draws moisture into the skin, eliminating dryness and irritation. This provides a gentle alternative to alcohol-based formulas where personnel are required to sanitise their hands frequently, and a safer option in environments where alcohol wipes might present a fire hazard.
