The World Health Organisation (WHO) and a range of medical authorities across the globe have highlighted disinfectants as playing a critical role in the fight against Covid-19. This is because effective disinfectant products are particularly strong in attacking enveloped viruses, compromising their outer layer and degrading its structure. As far as these quaternary ammonium compounds go, benzalkonium chloride is one of the most effective and long-established surface-acting agents in history. Introduced by disinfectant giant Lysol at the turn of the 20th century, the chemical was quickly adopted by cleaning product manufacturers across the world. But what makes the benzalkonium chloride in Antios wipes so powerful? The answer lies in how the chemical’s molecules have an ammonia atom at centre of two methyl stubs and two long carbon chains, with positively charged carbon chains being attracted to the negatively charged membranes that envelope bacteria and viruses – including Covid-19. This effect leads to the fatty envelope encasing the virus to be broken apart, destroying and neutralising harmful pathogens in the process.

Beyond its application across a range of settings, this chemical offers itself as a strong alternative to alcoholic formulas, in many cases yielding a less irritating effect upon the skin, killing 99.9% of bacteria without causing adverse dermatological effects. The Antios formula also contains glycerine, a natural humectant that retains and draws moisture into the skin, eliminating dryness and irritation. This provides a gentle alternative to alcohol-based formulas where personnel are required to sanitise their hands frequently, and a safer option in environments where alcohol wipes might present a fire hazard.
