2020: it’s safe to say that this year has been quite unkind to our skin. Public health demands around Covid-19 have required a higher level of hand hygiene than ever, with the average consumer washing their hands several times a day with alcohol based hand sanitisers (as well as low-grade antibacterial products).
Regular hand washing has represented a significant step in our response to the Coronavirus pandemic, and will continue in this capacity until an effective vaccine has been developed and widely distributed.
How to Wash Your Hands: A Reminder
If in doubt, consumers should consult the official NHS guidance on handwashing, which outlines the following steps:
- Wet hands with water.
- Apply enough soap to cover hands.
- Rub your hands together.
- Use 1 hand to rub the back of the other hand and clean in between the fingers. Do the same with the other hand.
- Rub your hands together and clean in between your fingers.
- Rub the back of your fingers against your palms.
- Rub your thumb using your other hand. Do the same with the other thumb.
- Rub the tips of your fingers on the palm of your other hand. Do the same with your other hand.
- Rinse your hands with water.
- Dry your hands completely with a disposable towel.
- Use the disposable towel to turn off the tap.
Washing our hands thoroughly under hot water for a minimum duration of 20 seconds is essential. However, this has had its impact on the general dermatological health of the public – especially where the hands are concerned. This means that more and more people are attending GPs with complaints around dryness, itchiness and inflamed skin on the hands.
So – what is happening here? The answer lies in what happens to the stratum corneum (the top layer of our skin) when it is continuously exposed to water, soap and skin cleansers. This layer of skin will become very dry compared to the rest of your skin, causing further disruption of the skin barrier, as well as inflammation. These symptoms eventually mount to cause hand dermatitis; specifically irritant contact dermatitis.
Avoiding Dermatitis With Antios
Here at Antios, we’ve been proud to play our role in the fight against Covid-19 with a range of effective and approved antibacterial wipe products, all packed with essential compounds like benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) which kills enveloped viruses.
These compounds are proven to combat and denigrate the fatty proteins which envelope many viruses and harmful pathogens. However, many of the compounds contained within antibacterial wipe and alcohol-based sanitary products can cause incidences of contact dermatitis, especially when used on the skin multiple times per day. This means that consumers should protect their skin’s health – not just its hygiene.
Antios can help nurture skin that is soft and supple with a range of wipe products that come packed with health ingredients like argan oil, aloe vera and other moisturisers. We’ve picked out some of our favourite products that love your skin:
